WHY BOOK A TOUR WITH NORMANDY INSIGHT?

With a foundation of almost thirty years experience in historical tourism, all tours are all based on thorough research into the subject and are continually being updated as new evidence emerges.

You'll be provided with an insight into the events 1944, providing context for the experiences of individuals, be they Allied or German soldiers or French civilians.

WHY DON’T YOU PROVIDE TRANSPORT?

A driver/guide needs to concentrate on the former, naturally. With either you, the client, or a hired chauffeur* driving, your guide can concentrate on that aspect.

À chacun son métier…

Also, in France there are laws regarding the transport of paying passengers, and agents to enforce those laws. A legitimate contrôle by these agents can disrupt a tour if your guide is also your driver.

*If you don’t fancy driving in France, please ask regarding suggestions for transport.

WHAT INSURANCE DO WE NEED?

Within legal obligations, whatever you feel appropriate. I'm afraid I can't hold any responsibility for any loss, damage or injury to persons or property during a tour.
As tours are conducted in your vehicle, it's down to you to make sure it's secure.
Some places we visit are hazardous to varying degrees. I will endeavour to warn of any
potential dangers but self-responsibility is key. Everything you do is at your own risk.

WHO WILL BE ON TOUR WITH US?

As all tours are private, whoever you wish.

WHO WILL BE OUR GUIDE?

All our tours are guided by me, Sean. The short biography here gives a little background.

HOW DO WE PAY?

Either cash on the day, or in advance with Paypal, whichever is most convenient for you.

CAN WE PAY CASH WITH CURRENCY OTHER THAN EUROS?

Sorry, no. Partly to limit charges but also because of regular fluctuations in currency exchange rates. Visit here to convert the cost to another currency.

WHY AREN’T THE PRICES LISTED ON THE WEBSITE?

Because each tour is different, each tour is priced individually and therefore more efficiently. This can take into account distance, length of tour and other issues.

DO WE NEED TO READ UP ON OUR HISTORY BEFORE THE TOUR?

It’s up to you. Your tour can be tailored to cater for all levels of knowledge or interest. If you really feel you need some backgound, you could do a lot worse than watch the old black and white film “The Longest Day”, based on the book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. If you like reading, then please check our recommended reading list.

WHERE CAN YOU MEET US?

Anywhere within an hour or so drive of St Lô. This includes Caen, Bayeux, Cherbourg, Carentan…. If in any doubt, email us.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN NORMANDY?

It varies. It can be sunny in November, raining in August and it’s possible to have three seasons in one day throughout most of the year. Normandy is very green, for a very good reason. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst….

WHAT WILL WE NEED TO WEAR/BRING?

Sensible clothing and sensible footwear.
For the former, layers work well, including windproof and waterproof.

For the latter, there can be a fair bit of walking, not all of it on proper footpaths. Common sense is the order of the day. Comfortable and sturdy footwear which has been worn in.
In addition, a decent pair of binoculars can add much to your experience.

WHAT ABOUT LUNCH?

A normal lunch-stop would be about 30-45 minutes in a brasserie or similar. You can stop longer if you like but the more time spent eating the less time spent visiting the sites. Normandy has some great food and places to eat but they're best enjoyed in the evening.

NB The cost of lunch is not included in the fee for the tour.

WHAT IF WE HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES?

Just get in touch and we can discuss suitable arrangements for the tour.

WHAT IF WE DON’T HEAR BACK FROM YOU?

You should hear back within 24 hours from an initial email enquiry. Please take into account time zones whilst waiting for a reply. If you haven’t heard within 36 hours of your initial request, please try any of the other means (Twitter, Instagram etc) listed on the contact page.

WHAT IF THE TOUR CAN’T GO AHEAD?

Sometimes things happen beyond one’s control. This is one reason why I normally don't take a deposit; you will only be charged for the tour on the day itself. If I have to cancel due to illness or similar serious circumstances*, every effort will naturally be made to put you in touch with another guide who can help. Of course, if a deposit has been taken it will be refunded in full.

*As this is how I make my living, I will only cancel a tour if I really have no choice.

If you cancel within 48 hours of the scheduled start of the tour, a Paypal invoice will be sent for 25% of the total agreed cost of the tour. If you cancel before this, there will be no charge but perhaps you would consider a small donation to one of the charities listed here.
